What was once simply "Master" and "Apprentice" became "Lord," "Master" and "Apprentice." For instance, Darth Sidious was a Sith Lord, leading over the Sith Order, Darth Vader was a Sith Master, who answered only to Sidious. Once it became clear that two Sith just wouldn't cut it in the expanded world of Star Wars, the franchise added a new Sith rank. A similar role was also played by the Inquisitorius, a team of Force-sensitive warriors who were tasked with hunting down the remaining Jedi after Order 66. In essence, she wasn't training to become a Sith master, so there was no conflict. The series explained it away by saying that Vantress was a onetime Jedi Padawan who became a Sith assassin.
But since Dooku was Darth Sidious' apprentice, this would break the Rule of Two. Asajj Ventress was introduced in The Clone Wars animated series as Count Dooku's apprentice. Still, the Rule of Two was essentially too limiting for the Star Wars franchise as a whole, and a workaround for the rule was eventually introduced.
